Pacific Regional Preparations

The UN Ocean Conference is an important gathering for the Pacific. It is when the ocean takes the centre stage globally through a Conference that supports the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14). The dedicated ocean goal that our Pacific Members fought hard for its inclusion in the negotiation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
At the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting held in August 2024 in Tonga, Pacific Leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a united regional approach in preparing for the United Nations Ocean Conference 2025 (UNOC3). Recognizing the significance of a coordinated and inclusive process, Leaders endorsed a regional approach to guide and support all Pacific Members in their efforts leading up to UNOC3.
To ensure a comprehensive and well-coordinated preparation process, Leaders tasked the Pacific Ocean Commissioner with leading efforts in close collaboration with CROP agencies and the Pacific Ocean Alliance (POA). This approach aims to amplify Pacific voices, strengthen regional advocacy, and ensure that key priorities and challenges of the Pacific are effectively represented on the global stage.
Through this coordinated effort, the region seeks to elevate Pacific leadership in ocean governance, sustainable fisheries management, climate resilience, and so forth, reinforcing the central role of the ocean in the livelihoods, cultures, and economies of Pacific peoples.
